Similar Cells

“Endometriosis is where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other parts of the body.” (@nhsengland )
Similar Cells is an open studio and evolving exhibition for Endometriosis Awareness Month. Two artists with lived experience: Lisa Everest and Sarah Lloyd will be using the space as their studio throughout the month.
In England Endometriosis takes an average of 8 years and 10 months to diagnose (statistics taken from @endometriosis.uk). Every year Fourth Wall Folkestone continues to try our best to raise awareness and the battle still continues.

About The Artists
Sarah Lloyd:
I’m an artist researcher and social activist specialising in public engagement. Much of my work explores mental health as I have lived experience. I seek to reimagine the art world as more inclusive and accessible, where an artists’ role is to inspire and facilitate creative thinking. I’m passionate about learning through making, and how creative practice can be understood as a form of research. I believe in crossing the boundaries between academia and creative practice using cross-disciplinary ways of working.
I’m the founder of Fourth Wall Folkestone CIC, a creative research hub, informal gallery and open studio. I also have worked with various organisations that are leaders in the field of mental health such as Bethlem Gallery, Shape Arts, Outside In, Artistic UK and Maudsley Charity. Over 100 pieces of my artwork can be found within the Wellcome Collection, I have had work published with the Psychologist, the British Medical Journal, and the Lancet Journal of Psychiatry for whom I was the cover artist in 2018.
Lisa Everest:
My work has a strong connection to Mother Nature, personally that’s where I feel fully invested ,connected and supported. In one way or another I hope to show this to the viewer through my paintings.
My work jumps from serious topics like endometriosis to whimsical/spiritual themes but they both hold the common ground of mother, wombs, women, nature & natural.
Using mediums of acrylic, water colour, and collage, I’ve taught myself my craft.
I’ve been involved in group exhibitions with Folkestone Gallery and Fourth Wall Folkestone. I’ve held exhibitions on my own and raised over £1000 for Endometriosis UK trying to raise awareness.
I’m a practicing artist who is also currently self publishing a book about how we can connect to ourselves and nature.
