The Bethlem Gallery, established 1997, is situated on the grounds of The Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, London. Managed by a small, artist-led team, the gallery provides a professional space for high-quality artwork. It fosters a supportive artist-focused environment.
Sarah Carpenter (Founding Director of Fourth Wall Folkestone) has been an artist with The Bethlem Gallery since 2015. They have played a huge part in shaping her practice as an artist researcher within mental health. Also inspiring her to setup Fourth Wall Folkestone.
During this months open studios, Sarah will be creating work for exhibitions at The ORTUS and for Turf Projects. Whilst also preparing for workshops to be held in the wards of the hospital. She will be focusing on themes of vulnerability and strength, the use of force legislation within mental health services and thinking about curation of work within hospital settings.
Sarah uses open studios as an opportunity to highlight the varied ways in which creative practices can be used within health and social care settings to different effects.
